Avileña cow on pasture with a tree

Avileña-Negra Ibérica are a true miracle.

Since many centuries, cattle have been living in the rough mountains of Avila. Here, it gets down to -20°C in Winter and 35°C in Summer. Snow in Winter and drought in Summer.

Somehow, cattle have survived even the wolves. Like that, one of the hardiest breeds in the world evolved. Resilient to all kinds of extreme weather and predators.

Around 40 years ago, my father, also called Jaime Galiana, saw the great potential they have. Back then, they were still used as a tractor replacement. But this extreme toughness was something unique, that no other breed had. French breeds were coming into Spain, but they had a hard time. So he began to breed for better beef traits in Avileñas.

He has come a long way, making the breed popular in Spain again. Within the last ten years, we saw really good improvement, to a point, where the breed can compete with other popular beef breeds.

They are:

  • Highly fertile
  • Good carcass ratio: 56-59%
  • Good average daily gains: 1-1.2 kg/day
  • Super delicious; dark and very strong tasting
  • Extreme calving ease through a wide rump; also to bigger bulls
  • Weed killers, they even eat bushes and thistles
  • Fighting off wolves
  • Longevous

About Spanish breeding

Extreme Spanish climate has upsides and downsides. I use it to produce extremely fit and adapted cattle.
